Kendall Lewis Hunter, 78
Kendall Lewis Hunter, 78, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024, at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center.
Kendall was born on August 25, 1945, in Hallock, Minnesota, to Lewis and Viva Hunter. He was raised on the family farm in Lancaster, Minnesota, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lancaster Covenant Church. Kendall graduated from Lancaster High School in 1963. Following graduation, he attended Northern Community & Technical College in Thief River Falls and farmed with his dad.
In October 1967, he married Kathleen Uscensky at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lancaster, where they remained lifelong members. One month later, he was drafted into the United States Army, attending basic training in Fort Lewis, Washington, and Noncommissioned Officer school in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was sent to Vietnam in 1968, where he was assigned to the 11th Armored Calvary and led a platoon of 8 ACAVs and 32 men. He was awarded four Bronze Stars for heroism in a combat zone. After Vietnam, he attended the University of Minnesota Crookston for two years. He and his wife then returned to the family farm in Lancaster where they raised their family. They spent their entire life grain farming and raising beef cattle.
In addition to farming, Kendall worked at the Kittson County Highway Department for 39 years as a road surveyor and assistant county engineer. He was an active member of Lancaster Legion Post #214 for 52 years, serving as the post commander for 13 years. He also served on the Lancaster School Board for 16 years.
Kendall also loved playing and watching sports, hunting, snowmobiling, and playing cards. He treasured when his grandkids visited the farm so he could give them rides on tractors, 4-wheelers, and horses.
Kendall is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathy; son, Kraig (Francine) Hunter; daughter, Kendra (Nick) Wentworth; and son-in-law, Paul Erickson; grandchildren, Carson, McKenzie (Raul), and Alexis Hunter, Kai and Hunter Erickson, Kendall and Laiken Wentworth, and Myah Hunter Jenson; great-granddaughter, Kennedy May; brother, Dan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin; daughter, Kristin; his parents; his sister, Virginia; and his brother, James.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Friday, August 2nd at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hallock, Minnesota. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Lancaster, Minnesota, with lunch to follow at the Lancaster Community Center.
